About S.K. Steven Houston III, MD

Doctor Houston holds a Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Florida and earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He completed an internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami and an ophthalmology residency at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, FL.

Following residency training, Dr. Houston completed a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery and diseases at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.

Doctor Houston enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and son. He is also an avid ironman triathlete and enjoys running, biking, and swimming. Doctor Houston joined Florida Retina Institute in July, 2015.

Research Experience

Doctor Houston has extensive research experience on surgical and medical retinal diseases. He has over 70 peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international conferences. He has also first authored 8 book chapters, including a chapter in Ryan’s RETINA and Vitreoretinal Diseases: The Essentials.

Doctor Houston has particular interest in research on macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, optical coherence tomography and retinal imaging, and vitreoretinal surgery and instrumentation.

Additional interests include mobile and digital health technologies to improve patient care. Dr. Houston is a manuscript reviewer for Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences (IOVS) and Retina. He is also a contributing writer for Retina Today, New Retina MD, and iMedicalApps.com
