Dr. Mavrofrides has contributed to peer-reviewed publications in leading ophthalmology journals, including Retina, American Journal of Ophthalmology, and Archives of Ophthalmology. His research spans complex retinal conditions such as macular holes, pediatric retinal detachment, choroidal neovascularization, and retinopathy of prematurity. He has authored multiple chapters on optical coherence tomography and vitreoretinal interface disorders and presented at major conferences including ARVO. In addition, Dr. Mavrofrides serves as a sub-investigator in numerous FDA clinical trials advancing treatments for retinal diseases, including protocols for diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.

Dr. Elias C. Mavrofrides is the Medical Director of Florida Retina Institute. He joined the practice in August 2004 and has been recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctors since 2010. Elias C. Mavrofrides, MD, is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and fellowship-trained in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery. Dr. Mavrofrides earned both his Bachelor of Science and medical degree from the University of Florida. He completed his internship and ophthalmology residency at Baylor College of Medicine, followed by a vitreoretinal fellowship at the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, ranked #1 eye hospital in the U.S.
