A B-scan or ultrasound, is commonly used to provide your doctor with an image of the retina that he or she is unable to obtain upon typical examination.
Certain conditions, such as a dense cataract or a vitreous hemorrhage (bleeding in the back of the eye) can obscure the doctor’s view of the retina. The b-scan provides a cross sectional image of the back of the eye using sound emitted by a special probe. The probe is placed on the lids of the patient’s closed eye, however the testing is painless and usually lasts less than one minute.
