Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is another diagnostic test designed to assist your doctor in identifying retinal abnormalities. The OCT is similar to an ultrasound, but uses light rather than sound to formulate an image of the back of the eye. During testing, the patient is asked to look into the lens of the device at a small, blinking target.
While focusing on the target, the patient will notice streams of light moving across the screen. These are actually a series of lights that are being measured to provide a cross sectional image of the retina. The test is non-invasive and takes only a matter of minutes.
